Born of English parents in the Virgin Islands, Edward Ivinson decided to seek opportunity in the West and arrived in Laramie at the age of 38 to sell dry goods in a log building.  Because he was considered an honest man – and because he brought with him a safe – he was the first town resident to open a bank.   He became a wealthy man, lending the money to build the courthouse and, later, donating land and money for a new hospital.  He brought business savvy – and a name to Ivinson Avenue, Laramie, Wyoming.
