The Downtown Farmers Market is a summer time favorite of many in Laramie, and this Friday there will be a special booth at the event. In addition to all the normal vendors, the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will have their own booth to register to walk in their event at 5:00 p.m. the same day. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s booth will open at 4:00 pm for those who want to walk in the event, donate to the cause or purchase raffle tickets.

Those wishing to pre-register for the walk can do so at www.alz.org/walk. Donations can also be made at that site. If you do not want to pre-register for the walk, registrations will be accepted between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s booth. Participants can choose to walk as a team or individually.

Many local vendors and merchants have donated items to put up for raffle at the event. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the booth for $5 each or five tickets for $20. Donations are also accepted at the booth. Those who are walking are encouraged to make a free will offering donation of any amount. Those who donate or purchase raffle tickets will receive a t-shirt for the walk.

The official walk begins at 5 p.m. The start and end point will be at the event booth, and participants will walk around downtown. All money raised goes to the Alzheimer’s Association, and most of those funds will be used in attempts to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Participants in the walk are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones who have or had Alzheimer’s to put on the Forget Me Not Board. This board serves as a reminder of those who people are walking for. People can also write the name of a loved one on the board to show they are walking for them.

According to event organizer Andy Smith, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Of the top ten leading causes of death, Alzheimer’s is the only one that cannot be slowed, prevented or cured.
