The University of Wyoming Police Department will lead active shooter response training on the UW campus early next week.

UW Spokesman Chad Baldwin said local and regional law enforcement officers will participate in the training, including the Laramie Police Department, Wyoming Game and Fish, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The training scheduled to take place Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 14 and 15, in the basement of the UW classroom building. The exercises are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday.

The UWPD wants to notify the public of the training and avoid any concerns from citizens who see uniformed officers and marked patrol cars in the area.

“This will be scenario-based training including the use of simunitions – wax bullets – in the classroom building basement,” UWPD Chief Mike Samp says in a statement.

Samp said signs will be placed on the classroom building doors to inform the public of the training and Baldwin said residents will not be able to hear the training exercise.

Baldwin said the upper floors of the classroom building will be open during the training, but the basement level will be closed.
