The Laramie Plainsmen return home for the first time in three weeks and are coming in on a hot streak.

Friday night at Deti Stadium Laramie will face the 5th-ranked Cheyenne East Thunderbirds.

Laramie (2-4) has won back-to-back games in the same season for the first time since 2011. They’ll be seeking their first three-game win streak in a decade. With both victories coming on the road, at Central in overtime two weeks ago and last Friday at South in a shootout, Laramie is also trying to complete a sweep of the Cheyenne schools for the first time.

The last Plainsmen win over East was back in 2009, which is the last time the T-Birds failed to make the 4-A playoffs.

No. 5 Cheyenne East (3-3) looks to run the football with sophomore Ethan Ashworth. The T-Birds are second in 4-A in rushing at 218.3 yards per game. Ashworth has run for 475 yards and seven touchdowns in only four games. East has also seen the return of senior Uriah Gracia, who was the starter at the beginning of the season. Senior quarterback Baylor Hayes is also adding 78 yards per game on the ground. By comparison, they struggle throwing the ball at only 113 per outing and have yet to record a t-d pass.

Laramie counters with a balanced attack. The Plainsmen are gaining 167.3 yards per game on the ground and passing for 149.3 per game. Junior Taylor Dodd leads the charge. He’s averaging 236.7 all-purpose yards per game, which ranks second in 4-A. Senior David Corliss is adding 55 yards per game and has scored five rushing touchdowns. Dodd’s favorite target is junior Conor Beeston, who has 26 receptions for 414 yards and four scores. Most of that’s come in the last two games.

The edge in the match-up may be with the East defense, which is third in 4-A, and gives up only 289.7 yards per game.

Laramie Plainsmen head coach Chuck Syverson visited with the ‘voice of the Plainsmen,’ David Settle, about the momentum Laramie has, keeping his team focused on the game and all things to know about East.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m. at Deti Stadium.

KOWB (AM 1290) will air the game. The broadcast coverage will start at 5:30 p.m. with David Settle and VerDon Hoopes calling the action.
