The Name Will Remain the Same

The name and legacy of the man who built Laramie High School football into a powerhouse will remain with the stadium at the new location.

Wednesday evening the Albany County School Board voted unanimously to keep the name of the new stadium at the new high school, “Deti Stadium.”

The Deti name is synonymous with Laramie High School football. John Deti Sr. is who the stadium is named after, while his son John Deti Jr. kept the tradition going. The two combined to coach for 59 seasons, won over 360 games and 16 state championships. Deti Sr. was also the architect of Wyoming’s longest winning streak of 34 games from 1959-1963, a record that still stands.

The School Board had solicited a wide array of public opinion on the topic. They held a special comment period Wednesday prior to their regularly schedule board meeting. The School Board also took into consideration the results of a poll on the Albany County School District website, and another poll from the Laramie Boomerang.

The public comment period featured a group of speakers in favor of keeping the name the same with none against. Both polls also referenced the fact there was more support than opposition for keeping the “Deti Stadium” name.

The vote had been scheduled for the board’s December meeting, but was moved up based on the support.

After the unanimous vote, the crowd in attendance broke out into a jovial applause.

John Deti Jr. was present when the motion passed. He simply said, “Thank you. Thank you very much.”

The tradition and legacy of Plainsmen football from the Deti name will carry on to a new “Deti Stadium.”
