Once a year, everyone pulls out their favorite Super Bowl recipes.  Super Bowl recipes, like those for other important holidays, are critical.  At Christmas, you may be crammed in a room with all of your least favorite in-laws and cousins, but at least you can enjoy the food.  Likewise, even if your team loses the Super Bowl, you can bury your sorrows in some comfort food.

Buffalo Chicken Wings

A Super Bowl Party is not complete without the wings.  But instead of running to Wal-Mart or Safeway to grab a bag of pre-made, frozen wings or calling a delivery pizza place for wings, why not try making your own? While they may seem complicated, chicken wings are surprisingly unintimidating once you have a handle on a great recipe.  Amy Ash’s wing recipe has received almost a full five stars from reviewers, and her wings are sure to make any from the frozen food section look and taste like reheated leftovers.  And if you’re worried about your guests being conscious of eating a messy food, pull up this video at half-time.

Annie’s Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips

While it’s great to serve staples like wings at your Super Bowl party, don’t feel pressured to serve a wholly traditional spread.  A great way to mix up your Super Bowl feast is by adding some lighter, unique dishes that are not heavily salted or swimming in their own grease.  Your guests, who have still managed to hang on to their New Year’s resolutions, will thank you.   Annie’s Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips provide a healthy alternative to the standard dip smothered in cheese, beans, and guacamole (and of course, calories).  With over 2,900 reviewers, this recipe still has received a five-star rating.  If you do not have time to make the cinnamon chips, on reviewer said she uses gram crackers instead.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

I hesitate to recommend this recipe for your Super Bowl Party because, if you’re like me, time can sometimes be more valuable than taste.  However, skimming the ingredients list, my eyes tell my taste buds to crave chili, and my stomach grumbles in response.  With 28 ingredients, there is surely a flavor to please every taste bud—and every guest.  One reviewer said this chili, “The meat melted in your mouth, the flavors tingled nicely all the way to your toes. I just won a chili cook-off with it so that might be a large part of the reason.”  The creator of this recipe, mightypurdue22, said that it can be made ahead of time, so if you do not have time to make this recipe on Sunday, try making it Saturday night.  This recipe might be a lot to tackle, but nothing is more satisfying than getting a sack on Super Bowl Sunday.

Brown Sugar Smokies

If you always seem to be short a crock pot or two, instead of using one crock pot for the classic little smokies recipe, try this variation instead.  This recipe sounds more complicated than it actually is.  With only three ingredients, you can use the time saved on this recipe for the boilermaker tailgate chili.  This recipe received 1,200 reviews and an overall rating of five stars.  One reviewer wrote, “I make these lil' smokies for every function and gathering. People may even ask to make sure I am bringing them.” Another reviewer wrote, “If you want a WOW recipe ~ THIS IS THE ONE! Salty, Sweet and Savory.”

With 660 reviews and 4.5 stars, these little bites will spice up your party (literally).  And with only a ten minute prep time, you can easily add these appetizers into your Super Bowl menu even if it is already full.  This recipe also allows for a bit of improvisation, such as mixing different spice blends (like chipotle or garlic) into the cream cheese.  However, if you do choose to make this recipe, browse the reviews briefly. Many reviewers have suggested baking the peppers instead of grilling them, as well as soaking them in water to relive some of their kick.  Another reviewer mentioned that the peppers and cream cheese should be frozen for about 15 minutes to firm up the cream cheese before grilling/baking. But the recipe is worth it, as one reviewer pointed out, “We've been making these for years and they are delicious”
