The University of Wyoming Snowy Range Summer Theatre continues the 2015 season with “The Mountaintop,” an imaginative and powerful depiction of the last night of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Presented by the UW Department of Theatre and Dance, Katori Hall’s “The Mountaintop” runs June 23-27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts Studio Theater. Tickets cost $10 for the public and $7 for students, senior citizens and children over age 5. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more people. Exhausted after delivering one of the most memorable speeches of his career, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has just retired to his usual room at the Lorraine Motel. But, when a feisty maid arrives with unexpected news, King is forced to confront his humanity, destiny and legacy.

Directed by Leigh Selting, head of the UW Department of Theatre and Dance, “The Mountaintop” is a “thrilling, wild, provocative flight of magical realism. The King that is left is somehow more real and urgent and whole,” according to an Associated Press review.

“The Mountaintop” premiered in 2009 in London to critical acclaim, and was soon transferred to London’s West End, where the production garnered the 2010 Olivier Award for Best New Play. It became a Broadway hit in 2011, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. The Snowy Range Summer Theatre’s production features UW Theatre and Dance alumni Mykel Hill and Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako.

Hill, a fixture on stage during his time at UW, was a member of the 1987 Western Athletic Conference champion football team. He later earned his MFA in acting from the University of Washington. He is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States.

Nako last performed with the Snowy Range Summer Theatre in 2009 in the musical “The Last Five Years.” A Laramie native, she earned her BFA from UW. She is a professional actor/singer in Seattle, Wash., having graced the stages of Village Theatre, Balagan, Seattle Public Theater, ArtsWest Playhouse, Seattle Musical Theatre and Washington Ensemble Theatre. Nako most recently performed the title role in “Little Bee” in Book-It Repertory Theatre’s critically acclaimed stage adaptation of the Chris Cleave novel. Nako has worked in film, television, commercial/industrial and voiceover, and was lead singer/dancer for Playlist Productions on board two ships in the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet.
