Activity: Snowshoeing

Best Location: Routt or Medicine Bow National Forest

Cost: Free or very little (Equipment Only)

One of the great things about the location in which we live is the quick access to public lands for all kinds of purposes. If you have never been snowshoeing your missing an activity that is not only fun and relaxing, but also a great workout for your family or group of friends. Just take a look at the picture of Brooklyn Lake that I took on a recent showshoeing trip in the Snowy Range. There are even cabins that you can rent from the Forest Service if you want to spend a night out in some beautiful country.

If it is your first time showshoeing, I would plan on spending no more than 1-2 hours out walking around or it might become more than you bargained for! Make sure to take some food to snack on and a bottle of water as well.

Best of all this activity won't cost you a bundle; if you don't have acces to a pair of snow shoes they are relatively cheap to rent from a local merchant. University of Wyoming students can rent a pair from the Outdoor Adventure Program in the Half Acre Gym at a minimal cost.

You can pretty much take off on snowshoes anywhere you like; just make sure you don't get lost! If you would like maps of the official trail systems in the Routt or Medicine Bow National Forests, visit the local Ranger District office. In Laramie the office is located at:
