The Natrona County School District has made an initial response to the allegations that the principal of Park Elementary knew about a sexual predator near the school and City Park but did not tell parents, students and teachers.

The district issued this response Tuesday morning:

"The Natrona County School District's first priority is the safety of our students and staff. We work closely with law enforcement agencies to develop and implement safety practices, trainings, and protocols. The recent situation near Park Elementary School has given the District opportunity to improve these practices and protocols.

"The District is reviewing internal communication processes to guarantee standard practices are implemented and shared district-wide. The goal of this review is to improve practices in providing relevant and timely information to our students, parents, and staff."

Parent Amanda Huckabay told the district's board of trustees Monday that her daughter was walking home from Park Elementary when a man approached her and exposed himself.

Her daughter ran home and called her, Huckabay said. The daughter described the man, Brenden Day, to police and he was arrested.

Park Principal Dawn DeWald told Huckabay that police told her about a possible pedophile near the school, but she didn't tell parents because some were uncomfortable with the subject.

After the trustees meeting, Superintendent Steve Hopkins said the district's attorney advised him to not comment on the matter until it can be fully investigated.
