A lockdown was lifted at Rawlins Elementary School late Tuesday morning after a student brought a handgun into one of the school buildings.

All students are safe, according to a statement from Carbon County School District One.

The district says staff members reacted quickly and appropriately. The Rawlins Police Department was notified and officers promptly responded to the building.

"Rawlins Police determined the gun was brought to school out of curiosity and the student wanting to show classmates," the statement reads in part. "There was no direct threat to any student or staff."

The lockdown was subsequently lifted and normal school activities resumed.

A person who answered the phone at the Rawlins Police Department told K2 Radio News that a police statement regarding the incident would be forthcoming.
