Any pharmacy in the state would be allowed to sell a life-saving drug over the counter without a prescription, should a bill with bipartisan support become law.

Naloxone blocks or reverses the effects of opioids and can be used to treat an overdose in an emergency. It is injected into a muscle, beneath the skin or through an IV into a vein.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office and University of Wyoming Police Department began carrying the drug this year.

House Bill 268 would create a new section of Wyoming Statute, 35-7-1064, which would make naloxone more widely available to the public.

The measure would also apply to naloxone hydrochloride, Narcan, Evzio or any other name used for naloxone hydrochloride, effective July 1.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Bunky Loucks (R-Casper), Rep. Cathy Connolly (D-Laramie), Rep. Tyler Lindholm (R-Sundance), Rep. Charles F. Pelkey (D-Laramie), Rep. Dan Zwonitzer (R-Cheyenne), Sen. Fred A. Baldwin (R-Kemmerer) and Sen. Curt Meier (R-LaGrange).
