Laramie Plainsmen, State Champions, Cross Country, 2017

The dominance of the Laramie Plainsmen cross country program continued Saturday with team and individual titles in Sheridan.

Laramie won their sixth consecutive 4A boys team championship with 45-point victory in the team race. The Plainsmen placed five runners in the top 17 spots and scored 44 points in route to the team crown.

Make it five in a row for individual titles, as well. Senior Albert Steiner, who Laramie coach Greg Schabron called a “man on a mission” after the conference championships, won the 4A title on the 5K course. Steiner ran 15:55.06 and beat his senior teammate Philip Henry by nearly six seconds.

Henry was the defending champ and had a time of 16:01.03, good for second place. Steiner’s victory also stopped a streak of four straight wins by members of the Henry family.

Senior Liam McInroy came in eighth at 16:48.18. Junior Derk Lyford was 16th place (17:04.24), while sophomore Mason Swingholm finished 17th (17:13.18).

Laramie was led by sophomore Abigail Whitman, who finished third in a time of 18:21.24. Fellow sophomore Emmy Johnson placed fifth at 18:55.66. Junior Allison Dodds came in 11th place (19:53.71).

This marks the third year in a row that LHS brings home top three trophies in both boys and girls cross country from the Sheridan V.A. Hospital grounds.
