Laramie resident voters will have four options for the selection method for members of the Laramie City Council on the ballot for the special election on Nov. 8th. This past summer the Laramie League of Women Voters (LWV) initiated a petition to change the current seven ward system being used to elect city council members.

The options on the ballot include electing all councilman at large, electing three councilmen from three wards, electing two councilmen from three wards with three councilmen elected at large, and the current system which elects one councilmen from seven wards with two councilmen elected at large. You can view a sample ballot by clicking here.

The LWV claims that the pool of potential candidates is two small under the current ward system and that it ignores neighborhoods in West Laramie. According to the LWV most Wyoming towns with wards have only three, while Rock Springs has four wards and Laramie has seven.

If the number of wards is changed in Laramie, it will be up to the current nine city council members plus nine non-council member named in the petition to serve as the boundary committee of 18 members.

The Nov. 8 Laramie Ward Election will take place at the Laramie Community Recreation Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Gem City Grand Bus Route is a free bus route that has a stop at the Laramie Community Recreation Center. You can view the bus schedule by clicking here.
