A Milk Can Dinner, giant kites and stagecoach rides are some of the fun new pieces to the Butch Cassidy Festival at the Wyoming Territorial Prison. Formerly Butch Cassidy Days, the now one day festival will take place on June 9 from 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

"Butch Cassidy Festival is a community celebration that is designed to engage visitors of all ages with activities, entertainment and education," says Deborah Amend, Site Superintendent. "Experience a day full of fun from kids' kites running with the Bols, trick ropers to story time with Moose. Meet Butch Cassidy and special guest appearance by Smokey the Bear."

Kids are invited to purchase or bring their own kite to fly in the wide open area at the event along side stunt kites and giant kites, some up to 525 square feet and some with 100 foot tails. There will also be a "kite doctor" available to help kids adjust their single line kite and fly their kites. Other new activities include horse-drawn stagecoach rides, search and rescue dogs, Wyoming wildlife identification, corn shelling, bouncy castle and more.

For those interested in outlaw history and Butch Cassidy, author Larry Pointer will give a presentation in the afternoon. Pointer recently released his book "Butch Cassidy's Story: Bandit Invincible" detailing the lives of Butch Cassidy and William Wilcox, aka William Phillips, a Butch Cassidy impersonator who was imprisoned with Cassidy at the Wyoming Territorial Prison.

Also new this year is an evening event. The public is invited to stay for supper after the festival activities have ended with a Milk Can Dinner and musical entertainment in the Horse Barn Theater at 5:30 p.m. Academy of Western Artist's Female Performer of the Year Award winning songwriter Mary Kaye will be performing cowboy and outlaw songs.

While the Butch Cassidy Festival is offering many new items, many favorite activities are returning including the kids money scramble, kids stick horse rodeo, a "prisoner" escape, petting zoo and vintage cars and tractors. It's also a good chance to check out the new "Science on the Range" exhibit.

Admittance to the Butch Cassidy Festival is $5 for adults, $2.50 for students ages 12 to 17 and free for children under 11. The Milk Can Dinner and Musical Show have limited seating and tickets cost $20. The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site is located at 975 Snowy Range Rd in Laramie.
