Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for President of the United States, spoke to an auditorium of students at UW Thursday night.

Students as well as members of the public gathered in the Education Building Auditorium on UW’s Campus to listen to and ask questions of Johnson, who also served as a Republican Governor for the state of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003. ¬†Johnson took to the stage wearing a sport coat over a t-shirt and blue jeans, and covered a wide range of issues including government spending, the energy industry, the environment and the arts among others.

Johnson also addressed issues facing he and others as third-party candidates, specifically the idea that a vote for a third party is a wasted vote. ¬†“What is a wasted vote other than voting for somebody you don’t believe in?” ¬†Further Johnson said that Wyoming will likely sway for Republican candidate Mitt Romney, but added that hoped that the Libertarian party would gain enough of a foothold in the state to “[Show] a political safe ground of actually talking about the issues and potentially dealing with the issues.”

As to the two major parties on the American political scene, Johnson said that Republicans and Democrats were heavy on talk but light on action, criticizing the Democrat action on social issues and Republican action on fiscal issues.
