A man arrested Monday is charged with felony check fraud after allegedly writing 56 bad checks to two local pizza places since May.

Jeffrey D. Niggemeyer, 19, is charged with felony check fraud and misdemeanor marijuana possession. If convicted on both counts, he could face up to 10 years, six months in prison and $10,750 in fines.

Court documents say the Laramie Police Department began to investigate on July 8 when a police officer met with a Papa John's employee and reportedly learned that between May 23 and June 18, there had been 16 checks written to Papa John's for pizza. Those checks were reportedly written on a closed account belonging to Niggemeyer.

The officer spoke with Niggemeyer on July 11. Niggemeyer allegedly told the officer he wrote the checks knowing the account was closed and he had written bad checks on the same account to Domino's, with the last check to Domino's reportedly written on July 10.

According to the affidavit, a Domino's employee confirmed to the officer that Niggemeyer wrote a total of 40 bad checks to Domino's.

The officer reportedly determined the total amount of the 56 bad checks to be $1,333.06. Niggemeyer was arrested Monday.

Niggemeyer pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge during his initial Circuit Court appearance Tuesday morning. Judge Robert Castor set bond at $10,000 cash and set two scheduling conferences: one for Aug. 18 on the misdemeanor charge and another for July 25 on the felony check fraud charge.

Castor on Tuesday appointed a public defender to represent Niggemeyer.
