Thankfully for us in Laramie, there have not been any wildfires in our immediate proximity. Thankfully for areas with wildfires however, Laramie firefighters are available to help.

Fresh off the scene of the Guernsey State Park Fire, two firefighters and a college student with the Laramie Fire Department have gone to Colorado to assist in the Little Sand Fire, just west of Pagosa Springs in the San Juan National Forest.

According to LFD Company Officer Jim Hoflund, the local firefighters went down to the blaze with Laramie Fire Department Engine 6, a type 6 wildland engine that is essentially a Ford F-550 capable of holding about 400 gallons of water. A type 6 wildland engine is commonly used in wildfire prevention, and the truck from Laramie could stay in Colorado all summer.

The firefighters however will not remain down South all summer as two LFD replacements will be heading to the area this weekend. The replacements will be going to the fire because federal regulations mandate firefighters take two days off after working 14 days on a scene, and combining the time fighting the Guernsey State Park Fire, the LFD workers at the Little Sand Fire have now been fighting wildfires for over a week.
