Lady Plainsmen Hoping to Attack at State Soccer Tournament

It's a familiar place and a familiar foe, as the Laramie Lady Plainsmen open the 4A State Soccer Tournament against Green River today.

Laramie (10-4-2) is the 4A East number three seed and faces the 4A West number two seed, which happens to be the Lady Wolves for a second straight year. Green River (13-4-2) won the regular season conference title in the 4A West Conference, but lost to Kelly Walsh in the regional title game last weekend.

LHS head coach Kim Whisenant said it's funny how it worked out like this again matching up against the Lady Wolves.

"We did a little bit of a scouting report. We know a couple of the players they have from last year. My (Cowboy) Turf Wars team played against them this winter, so I kind of know what they're all about."

The Lady Plainsmen took care of Green River last year by a 7-1 final score.

Senior forward Ariel Romero is looking forward to playing at the state tournament for a couple of reasons. First, she missed last year due to an injury. Second, her younger sister, freshman Sekoya, is finally healthy after an injury. They'll get to play together in a match for the first time.

Ariel says, "I think we need to work as a team, instead of individually. We have my sister coming back also, to play in the defense, so we'll have some speed back there. Hopefully we'll get the ball up and play more in the front third, instead of the back."

As for facing Green River, Romero adds, "I don't think we should think any less of them, than if it was East or Gillette. I think they're going to be a tough match."

The first round 4A State Soccer pairing will start at 11 a.m. at Rock Springs Junior High.
