Question:

I recently saw a pile of bagged green waste on the ground at the corner of 9th and Russell, where green waste bins are usually placed. Will the city discontinue the program if this abuse continues?

Answer:

Over the last few years, the city has been concerned with the abuse and illegal dumping occurring at green waste locations. Multiple media formats have been used to inform the public of those concerns and the proper use of the green waste sites.

Recently, information has been shared through multiple formats to address the ongoing and increasing frequency of the abuse and illegal dumping at the green waste sites. The city council held a work session on April 11, 2017 to discuss the concerns and possible options to modify the program. As illegal dumping increases costs, it must be remembered that solid waste is an enterprise fund of the city through operating fees. Illegal dumping could increase fees or, if directed by the council, the program could cease.
