“Real Women, Real Bodies is a student organization at the University of Wyoming with the simple goal of creating positive body image. One of the ways we promote positive body image is through photo voice campaigns, in which we reach out to various community members and ask them to model for us in an attempt to share with the world the importance of recognizing the variety of differences around us. The campaigns we create draw attention to societal pressures and expectations of looking a certain way.”
“The most recent photo campaign, our fifth, combined our signature photography with a new element: chosen words. Each participant was asked to write a statement or find a quote that represented their own feelings about body image. The campaign begs two questions: first, when do we start objectifying ourselves and one another? The use of youthful images calls attention to the fact that children should be innocent and free of worries about image. Second, what are the internal effects of body image? The models’ statements brought out inner feelings and struggles when it came to body image, making viewers recognize the impact societal expectations have had”
Gallery 234 is located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union.
