Donations Sought for Laramie Glass Recycling Trailer

In an effort to keep Laramie's glass out of the city landfill, the Wyoming Conservation Corps is raising money to buy a new trailer to haul Laramie's glass recycling to the recycling center in Loveland, Colo.

As of Tuesday morning, 32 supporters had contributed $1,648. The fundraising campaign has 39 days left to raise another $4,862.

The Corps says its existing trailers were never meant to haul loads of 1,600-1,900 pounds of glass recycling on the three-and-a-half-hour, 144-mile round trip to Loveland. The trailers have quickly deteriorated, according to the Corps, and a new professional trailer is necessary to continue serve Laramie's glass recycling needs.

Last year, the Corps reported collecting tons of glass from Albany County residents over three days in the spring. The group made 25 trips, with each trailer carrying nearly one ton of glass, and many trailers reportedly suffering extensive damage.

Since glass recycling is largely no longer available in Laramie, the Corps hopes to continue taking the city's glass to Loveland in order to make sure it's recycled and increase the lifespan of Laramie's landfill.

"The WCC's essential service of carrying glass prevents tons of glass from filling an already-full landfill," according to the donation page.

The landfill has an estimated 40-year life expectancy at current disposal rates, according to the City of Laramie's website.
