Famed trumpeter Dave Douglas and other jazz ensembles will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the University of Wyoming Arts and Sciences auditorium.

Tickets for the concert cost $7 for the public and $5 for UW students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Wyoming Union or Fine Arts ticket offices and can be purchased online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts or by phone at (307) 766-6666.

The concert will include performances by the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, directed by J. Scott Turpen, UW Department of Music professor; the UW Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Ed Breazeale, UW Department of Music lecturer; and Douglas and the Dave Douglas Quintet.

"Dave Douglas is one of the most innovative and inspiring jazz artists, and it will be a real treat having him in Laramie," says Turpen, jazz studies director.

From New York City, Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer and educator. Since 1993, he has recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader.

Douglas has developed his work for several different ensembles. His new quintet released its debut recording, “Be Still,” last September with singer Aoife O’Donovan, the first time he has featured a vocalist on a recording. The work received critical acclaim. His follow-up recording, “Time Travel,” will be released next month.

Since 2005, Douglas has operated his own record label, Greenleaf Music, where he releases his own recordings, as well as albums by other artists in the jazz idiom. He is a co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.

He begins his second year as International Jazz Artist-in-Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London and launches his own jazz workshop, dedicated to enriching the musical experiences of younger players. Douglas’s contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland Award and two Grammy nominations.
