Six Cowgirls scored in double figures to lead Wyoming to a dominant 98-37 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs Tuesday night in Laramie.

Wyoming (2-1) led from start-to-finish and tied the fifth-largest margin of victory in school history. It marked the highest scoring game for the Cowgirls since they put up 99 points versus UNLV, Feb. 28, 2015.

Freshmen Tereza Vitulova and Alba Sanchez Ramos led Wyoming, as they both scored a career-high 16 points. Taylor Rusk finished with 12 points, while Marta Gomez and Rachelle Tucker had 11 each, and Bailee Cotton chipped in 10 points. Tucker and Cotton grabbed seven rebounds apiece, while freshmen Tommi Olson has six assists and six steals, both career highs, in 20 minutes off the bench.

Head coach Joe Legerski opened his post-game press conference by saying there was concern about a letdown.

“We had a big game on the road at Saint Mary’s (last Friday). It came right down to the last minute, and you wonder how you’re team’s going to respond. We talked about trying to improve the things we can, and I thought we did that tonight. People were shooting the basketball and making the next pass.”

UW shot 57.6 percent from the field. They were 14-28 from three. The Cowgirls forced 25 turnovers by the Mountain Lions that led to 43 points for Wyoming. They also had a 12-0 edge in fast break points.

UCCS (0-2) shot only 26.5 percent from the floor. They were led by Jae Ferrin with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Cowgirls broke the game open with a 21-0 run from the mid-point of the first quarter until the six-minute mark of the second. The score went from 9-5 to 30-5. The Mountain Lions went nearly 10 minutes of game time without a point. Wyoming expanded their lead with a 24-0 run that bridged the end of the first half and the start of the third quarter. It took the lead from 31-11 up to 55-11.

Wyoming is now averaging 87.3 points per game over their first three this season, but Legerski quickly shot down the notion of the new-look, high-scoring, run-and-shoot Cowgirls.

“No. No. We can shoot the basketball, and we have some players that even came off the bench. To watch Alba (Sanchez Ramos) score, boy, she can shoot the basketball, if you leave her open, and they felt comfortable being able to do that. We play half-court basketball. I think one of the things when I take a look tonight, I was happy with Tommi Olson having six steals and six assists, and we do not press, we play in the half court. That’s all her making steals on rotation plays, and that’s the stuff that we want to make sure we’re working and want to take away.”

The Cowgirls do not return to action until the Pacific Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 23 and Nov. 24.

Legerski said they’ll take a couple of days off, and they’ll spend a lot of time watching film looking at where they can improve.
