Behind a great defensive performance, the Wyoming Cowgirls snapped Boise State’s 10-game win streak with a 64-52 victory in Laramie Saturday.

Wyoming (11-5, 4-3) held the Broncos to under 37 percent shooting from the field and 25 points below their season average. The victory also gave head coach Joe Legerski his 300th career win.

Two of the top 3-point shooting teams in the country, UW and Boise State combined to go 5-of-26 (19 percent) from deep. Wyoming came in shooting 41.1 percent from deep, while the Broncos were at 38 percent.

One key for the Cowgirls was they got to the free throw line and went 21-27 for 78 percent.

Marta Gomez led three Wyoming players in double figures with 15 points. Bailee Cotton had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Karla Erjavec added 10 points. Clara Tapia scored a season-high nine points on 4-5 shooting.

UW shot 42 percent from the floor. They had a 36-34 advantage in rebounding and scored 13 points off 15 Broncos turnovers.

Boise State (15-3, 6-1) finished at 36.7 percent shooting for the game. They were 2-15, 13 percent, from deep. No Broncos player scored in double figures. Three players, Riley Lupfer, Sofia Galeron, and Jayde Christopher, each scored seven points apiece.

Wyoming never trailed in the game. After a brief tie at 2-2, Erjavec made a three-pointer from the top of the key. Cotton scored seven points in the first quarter and the Cowgirls led 22-14 after one. An 8-0 run in the second put UW ahead 30-16 with 4:06 left in the half. Wyoming enjoyed a 36-21 lead at the break.

In the second half, Boise State rallied within eight on three different occasions. A 7-0 run at the end of the third pulled the Broncos within 50-42. It was 54-46 when Erjavec nailed her second 3-pointer. That pushed the Cowgirls lead to 57-46. After Boise State got within 58-49, Wyoming turned up the defensive pressure and held the Broncos scoreless for just over four minutes in the final quarter.

The Cowgirls head to Fresno State Wednesday night for their first meeting against the Bulldogs. Tip-off is at 8 p.m., Mountain Time.
