(University of Wyoming release)

The University of Wyoming women's soccer team gave San Diego State its first Mountain West regular-season loss since Oct. 16, 2011, with a 2-1 victory at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. In what was an up-tempo, physically tough 90 minutes, junior midfielder Loren Mahoney scored her first two goals of the season for the Cowgirls.

SDSU'S streak spanned 14 regular-season Mountain West conference games as Boise State was the last to defeat SDSU by a score of 2-1. "We were consistent all day," Wyoming head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "I thought today was actually a better game than Friday's game and just a better team effort. We felt we have been a little snake bitten with a few games before this weekend and that things we're going against us, but we keep telling the girls they're going to swing back for us at some point."

It wasn't until the 72nd minute that Wyoming (6-8-1, 3-2 Mountain West) got on the board to tie the match at 1-1. After a foul called on a San Diego State (6-6-2, 4-1 Mountain West) defender, Mahoney lined up for a free kick on the right side from 40 yards out when she took her first shot that bounced out of the San Diego State's goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net. It was her first score of the season and the first goal SDSU had given up in over three games. In the 75th minute again lining up for a free kick, but this time in the middle of the field from 30 yards out, Mahoney's shot was just out of the Aztec's keepers reach and hit the crossbar before falling into the goal.

Mahoney's second score of the game proved to be the game winner for Wyoming and second game winner of her career. The Cowgirl defense remained cool under pressure as the remaining minutes seemed to get a little heated between the two teams. Despite the offensive pressure SDSU put on Wyoming, the Cowgirls were able to continue to find an answer and run out the clock to secure the home victory. Wyoming was able to win its second-straight game at home for the first time since beating Nebraska-Omaha 4-2 and Eastern Washington 4-1 on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 of last season. San Diego State's senior defender Carli Johnson gave the Aztec's the 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Johnson was able to head the ball past junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm off a corner kick. Senior midfielder Sophie Metz was credited with an assist. Boehm had another stellar performance protecting the goal for the Cowgirls. Boehm recorded five saves with three in the second stanza. SDSU's sophomore keeper Melanie Vaugh had four saves on the day. SDSU took the advantage in shots at 6-5 in the first half.

UW was able to take it in the second half, 5-4, as both teams finished the game with 10 shots total. Junior defender Kristin Howard led Wyoming with three shots, as Mahoney added two. Senior midfielder Liz O'Reilly, sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay, junior midfielder Alison Clarke and freshmen Mandy Meyer and Laurel Ramer each added one shot apiece for the Cowgirls. "It's great to have those two top teams in the Mountain West come here but we know we have more season to play. We still want to get a good seeding into the tournament, so we'll enjoy today's win today and tomorrow and Tuesday we will get back to work," Cuadrado added. Wyoming will return to Mountain West action on Friday afternoon against Fresno State at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT.
