It was the break-through the Wyoming Cowboys wanted. Saturday, the Cowboys snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 28-21 win over Nevada at War Memorial Stadium.

Cam Coffman threw for 213 yards and three touchdown passes in the first half. Brian Hill added 188 yards rushing, as UW won their first game since Nov. 1, 2014 at Fresno State (45-17).

Wyoming (1-6, 1-2) built a 28-7 lead and had to hold off a rally by the Wolfpack. Coffman connected with Jacob Hollister, Tanner Gentry and Jake Maulhardt, as the Pokes held a 21-7 edge at half. Kellen Overstreet’s first career T-D run early in the second half gave UW their 21-point advantage.

Nevada (3-4, 1-2) pulled within seven on a pair of Tyler Stewart touchdown passes. The Wolfpack reached the Cowboys 36 with 1:45 left and faced 4th-and-5. Wyoming’s D.J. May sacked Stewart and forced a fumble that was recovered by Stewart. After the turnover on downs, UW ran out the clock to secure their first victory of the season.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl was pleased with the effort of his team; knew the Pokes offense came through; and the defense stepped up to the challenge Nevada presented.

May finished with nine tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, the forced fumble and two pass break-ups to lead the Cowboys defense. He said the team stayed with it; they played their most complete game of the season and didn’t let anything outside affect what was going on with the team.

Bohl was asked how this win stacks up for him as a coach. He believes it might be one to look back on as a great building block.

The Cowboys return to action Saturday at Boise State. Kick-off is at 8:15 p.m.
