The Laramie City Council will be leaving the council chambers during their meeting tomorrow to take a mobile tour to gain information and answer questions about the city’s potential new public works facilities.

Laramie Mayor Andrea Summerville said the tour will take a look at the current facilities and visit the site of the new one, at the old WyoTech building on North 3rd Street. Summerville said any interested members of the public are encouraged to join city council on their tour.

“It’s really a good chance to have a conversation about why we are moving, why this is desperately needed and what kind of setup we are going to have once we get the remodel and stuff done on the old WyoTech campus and get questions answered,” Summerville said.

Summerville said the project has been in the works for a few years and is urgently needed. Summerville said the new space in the old WyoTech building will provide the city with the appropriate space for the city staff to work on vehicles and to store vehicles inside during the winter months.

“The storage and the space is a major component of it,” Summerville said. “The other piece is that the facilities that we have on 4th street now, they’re very old. They’re just not adequate for the equipment and the city staff.”

By purchasing the building, Summerville said the city will prevent the WyoTech building from sitting empty and will put the buildings to good use for the city of Laramie.

“By the city purchasing them and repurposing them for the city public works center, it puts those buildings to use so that they are not sitting there for sale, vacant for a long time.”

Summerville said it would also give the city the chance to beautify that section of 3rd Street and enhance one of the gateways to the community.

Summerville said the city council and any interested persons will meet in the city council chambers at 6 p.m. before heading out on the tour.
