Your Question:

Please explain how it is acceptable for a police officer to flick on his lights to run a light that has just turned red. I've witnessed this twice since moving here. After seeing it the 2nd time, I followed the officer out of curiosity. He stopped at McAllister's for lunch. How is this ok?

The City's Response:

Peace officers, when operating emergency vehicles, may intermittently active emergency equipment during the course of their duties, to accomplish a legitimate police mission.  It is possible that the officer he was following began a police response, was called off the response, and then went to break.  It is also possible  that McAllister’s was the intended destination and an emergency response was appropriate either initially and then not, or entirely, and in fact the officer was not stopping at the restaurant for lunch but on a call.  It would be inappropriate to use emergency lights just to get to break.
