Barrasso Votes For Disability Treaty; Enzi Opposed
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — One of Wyoming's senators was among just eight Republicans voting in favor of a United Nations disability treaty defeated in the Senate.
Sen. John Barrasso voted for the treaty backed by former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole on Tuesday. Sen. Mike Enzi joined with 38 other Republicans in voting against it.
The treaty is modeled after the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act and was widely backed by the disability community and veterans groups.
However, opponents argued that the treaty threatened U.S. sovereignty and could open the door to state meddling in parents' decisions regarding their disabled children.
