The Laramie County Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of multiple agencies, has begun searching a landfill west of Ault, Colorado for the body of 13-month-old Silas Ojeda.

“It would be nice if we found what we were looking for in day one, then we could shut all this down and get some answers for the family,” said Captain Linda Gesell. “Right now we’re going to take this day by day.”

Twenty-three-year-old Logan Rogers, Ojeda’s mother’s boyfriend, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child endangering with a controlled substance in the boy’s death.

Detectives say Rogers told them Silas suffered a concussion on October 20 after he fell off the counter at home and hit his head.

Rogers said Silas died the next day so he wrapped him in a white comforter and put him in a dumpster near Laramie County Community College.

“We were lucky enough that they were kind of able to cordon off a section (of the landfill) where they were pretty sure the Cheyenne trucks dumped,” said Gesell. “However, that doesn’t mean that we will get lucky and find anything in the first, second (or) third day.”

Rogers, whose preliminary hearing is set for November 9, is facing 25 years in prison if convicted. He is being held in the Laramie County Detention Center on $500,000 cash bond.
