Your Question:

I was wondering why there are no stop signs or yield signs in the housing areas south of Russell St between 9th and 15th streets. It is very dangerous especially at night. There should be something in place to help control the traffic.

The City's Response:

The traffic commission looked into traffic control devices on 13th south of Russell/Spring Creek a year or so ago and determined that they were not needed.  There had been no crashes and the traffic volume did not warrant any control devices.  There is good sight distance at the intersections.  The valley gutters are rather deep in that area so that tends to slow traffic at some of the intersections. That is till the situation today.

Some residents think that the alternating stop sign installation that is in place from about 4th to 22nd and Harney to Spring creek should be used throughout the City.  Observation has shown that having too many stop signs tends to encourage stop sign running, i.e., cars not stopping at the stops signs unless other vehicles are present.  The placement of 2 stop signs at every intersection is a large cost both for the signs and posts and the resulting sign maintenance.  Questions can be directed to the Street Division at 721-5277.
