GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — A years-long tax dispute between Alpha Natural Resources and a northeast Wyoming county has been resolved.

Campbell County commissioners officially closed the dispute on Tuesday by approving a settlement with the company.

The Gillette News Record reports that Alpha has agreed to pay the county $8.67 million to cover the final installment of taxes owed for 2015 and all but about $4 million of taxes still owed for 2016.

Commission Chairman Mark Christensen said the county spent about $1 million in legal fees trying to collect the unpaid tax, and that bill could have been higher if a settlement hadn't been reached.

Overall, about $19 million was owed for 2016, but the company already had paid off $7.7 million, and the other $4 million was forgiven in the settlement.
