The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a flash flood warning for south central Albany County.

The warning will be in place until 6:15 p.m. tonight. According to the warning, the flash flooding will remain over mainly rural areas of south central Albany County, including the area of I-80 between mile markers 298 and 308.

At 3:21 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned areas. Four to five inches of rain has fallen and flash flooding is expected to begin shortly. Additional rainfall amounts of one inch per hour are possible in the warned area.

The NWS advises people in the affected areas to avoid walking or driving through flood waters and to move to higher ground. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, according to the NWS.

The NWS has also posted a severe thunderstorm warning for Albany County through 5 p.m. tonight. Strong to severe thunderstorms will continue to develop this afternoon mainly west of the Laramie Range. The main threats will be hail up to quarter size, wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rainfall which may create some flash flooding.
