Friday evening, the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts will host “A Rambling Stretch,” a contemporary jazz concert by composer and Wyoming native Tyler Gilmore.  The show begins at 6 p.m., and admission is free.  The Wyoming Arts Council, UW Fine Arts Outreach, and Central Wyoming College are co-sponsoring the tour.

Some of the top jazz musicians from the western United States are included in the 12-piece chamber jazz ensemble that will perform all original music on Friday.  The featured work is a suite comprised of eight movements, influenced by modern composers such as Thomas Ades and Mark-Anthony Turnage.  The music, performed in the foreground of a video projection, embodies the composer’s emotional connection to Wyoming’s vast landscapes.

Tyler Gilmore graduated from Riverton High School in 2000.  In addition to winning the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010, he was awarded the 2009 ASCAP/Columbia College Commission in honor of Hank Jones. Gilmore’s work has been published by Minor Ninth Music and UNC Jazz Press.

“A Rambling Stretch” was first performed last Friday in Riverton, and the tour has made stops in Sheridan, Powell, Casper, Torrington, Thermopolis, and Rock Springs on its way to Laramie.  Partial funding has been provided by the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts.
